Ecotourism Opportunities Abound in New Jersey’s Highlands

The Highlands Region in New Jersey covers much of Northern New Jersey and includes portions of each of the following counties – Sussex, Passaic, Bergen, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset. The area stretches from Phillipsburg, Warren County in the southwest to Mahwah, Bergen County in the northeast. This lush region is rich in scenic beauty – geological rock formations, rolling hills and farmland, lakes, rivers and streams, and plenty of wildlife habitat. Choose from thousands of miles of trails, hundreds of bird species, dozens of rivers, lakes & streams, two National Parks, one breathtaking region all within a tank of gas from New York, Philadelphia and New England.

A landscape of time and treasures

As far back as 10,000 BC the Highlands characteristics were being formed when the Wisconsin Glacier retreated, dragging sediment along it’s path, which today form amazing outcroppings that can be found in many of the State Parks. The Region is also rich with historic, cultural, and archaeological resources due to Native American inhabitants, its place in American Revolutionary War era history, iron ore mining, the Morris Canal, agrarian settlements and the industrial revolution.
